A TikTok account managing City Tire in Batesville, Mississippi, went viral after sharing a case involving a shop mechanic who accidentally broke a car windshield during maintenance.

“We just broke this customer’s windshield trying to put some shocks on the front of this car,” he explained at the start of the clip.

“You need to remove the wiper arms and this cover here to access it, and my guy’s hand slipped and hit right at the bottom of the windshield. If it had been an inch lower, everything would have been fine,” he continued.

He then raised a question that sparked a wave of debates in the comments. Initially, the shop owner defended his mechanic, saying he would cover the repair costs.

“Obviously we’re going to fix it for the customer. He won’t pay a cent, but I know some places make employees pay for this. I don’t do that.”

If the damage was caused by negligence, the mechanic should pay.

According to legal experts and the U.S. Department of Labor, employers can only deduct from employees’ wages for work mistakes if there is a signed term in the contract specifying this condition.

Many users praised the City Tire owner’s approach for acting correctly toward his employee. “You’re a good boss, accidents happen.”

“You gave the right answer at the beginning when you said ‘we’. Bad managers would have blamed the mechanic for the mistake,” said another.
